So my group had an exhibition after a three week long technology project. We were told “learn something about tech and do something with it”. We found this project by Marshmallow Laser Feast. Inspired by that we thought Sweet! We can build a forest! Trees, bushes, grass and water…everything interactive with light and sounds! Then reality hit. We knew nothing about tech. We had to teach ourselves about circuit boards, setting and soldering LEDs and calculating volts and ohms; legit everything we did we had to learn ourselves from scratch. The Hyper Way.
We had to down size the forest to a tree. Afterr getting LEDs in line and failing a couple times with the design of the tree we changed the concept to something completely different; a crystal. We made geometric shapes out of paper and attached them after we installed the line of LEDs within the pole. We had a flex sensor at the bottom to measure the amount of bend in the pole to change the pitch of the frequency that the pole emitted via a wireless speaker. Once we figured out the coding for all of the parts, we were ready!
At the exhibition we learned anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. We had back-up plans for everything except the computer software effing up.
About 10mins before the doors opened the sound was giving us problems. But the amazing Philip (pictured above) fixed it all! And in the last two hours before the closing a guys and his friends bent the Crystal in half and laughed and walked away (still pissed off major!) It was broken in two pieces with no way of fixing it. But all in all we had a good 4-5 hours of great showing of the Crystal of Frequency and my group did a badass job, if I say so myself.
Here is the Crystal in action!
